VE103 - Vehicle on Hire Certificate
If you wish to travel and are planning on driving abroad using your leased vehicle, you will need a VE103 certificate. The certificate covers you driving abroad to any part of he EU and is the recognised alternative to the V5 document. It is important that you have this document with you when taking the vehicle abroad.
Have a look at the Q&A's below for more information:
1) What is the purpose of a VE103?
A VE103 or Vehicle on Hire Certificate is required by drivers who do not hold the original Vehicle Registration Document (VRD) i.e people with hire or lease vehicles. As hire / lease companies are unlikely to release the VRD, the VE103 proves that permission has been given to take the vehicle abroad.
2) Why do I need the VRD?
Everyone taking a vehicle abroad to any country is required to carry the original (not a copy) Vehicle Registration Document as proof that the driver of the vehicle is the owner. This is an attempt to reduce the number of stolen vehicles crossing foreign borders, as it is likely a vehicle stolen in the UK would not have the VRD with it.
3 How long is the certificate valid for?
The VE103 Certificate covers you whilst proceeding to and returning from the port of embarkation. It is valid for 12 months from the date of issue and will cover you for all foreign travel within that 12 month period.
4) How long does it take to process a completed application?
Approximately 5 working days from receipt of your application.
5) How much does it cost?
It won't cost you anything provided it is ordered more than 10 working days prior to travel.
